Current case studies peice on Sin City

For my independent study I will be writing up a textual analysis of Robert Rodriguez’s comic book translation “Sin City”, the dark, decrepit, and corrupt comic book Film Noir/Action Thriller. The film, released in cinemas in the year 2005, emerged from the well known comic books of the “Sin City” series, created by graphic novelist Frank Miller.

The film itself is an accurate and faithful projection of the comic book creation, it uses the novels from the series itself within the motion picture, following some key storylines that have emerged since Sin City’s introduction into the world of the comic book and animated genre.

Like Millers creation of the dark and disturbing series, the film uses the comic book imagery that’s present within Sin City, the use of pure black and white colour that Miller used to create his tales of murder, corruption, prostitution and many more shocking tales of Basin City, where the comic novels are set. Furthermore, like the comic the film only incorporates the odd splashes of colour for effect, and the focal characters designed by Miller are all present within the Rodriguez’s adaptation. Creator Frank Miller wanted the film to be true to his graphic novels, and cult director Rodriguez promised Miller that the adaptation would be as faithful as possible.

This is a promising start, Jack... but it is rather short! To gain a high grade, you will need to loook in detail at postmodernism to analyse whether this is a postmodern text, and if so, how.You may also want to look at the representation of women in the text.

Director Robert Rodriguez has produced many controversial films before, those notably being pictures such as "From Dusk Til Dawn" and his debut film "El Mariachi". With Miller working as the films co-director, Rodriguez and the novellist managed to create the comic book adaptation, that films directly from the novels written. Sin City is part of the new generation of digital film, using mainly CGI, High Definition and Digital technology, infact the whole film itself was shot in a warehouse with no real locations or sets, just a green screen in the background that by use of such modern technology, created the mise on scene of Basin City, with mainly guns and other weaponry for props. Sin City is one of the first 'fully digital' motion pictures.

Sin City maybe seen as an adaptation, but in a more accurate sense it's a 'translation', it's a revolution in the film industry, considering it comes from a comic book genre and contains extreme graphic violenec throughout.

Sin City is a film that contains many different character representations, one of the most notable being it's representation of the female characters, the women are powerful, dominant, and alluring, along with their obvious lust for violence, the girls of 'old town'in the film represent the 'femme fatale' of the motion picture, which itself is a very old fashioned female representation. The male characters in Sin City are corrupt, ruthless, evil, sinister, murderous and certainly rebellious. Every character in the film has a darkside. (still not completed) (almost)
